MILF group begins decommissioning fighters and is set to turn over weapons!

Decades long of fighting the Muslim rebel group Moro Islamic Liberation Front has now been given a chance for peace with the agreement of a new governing body for some parts of the Mindanao Region. The ‘Bangsamoro Basic Law’ aims not to have a different and separate type of government but an independent and cooperating governing body for some provinces in Mindanao, this is after agreeing to a fair claim and policy between the Philippine government and the group’s leaders.

The MILF claims just to have an independent leadership like in the past where a Rajah/Datu rules over everyone, now a leader will be elected by voting and will be replaced after a few years where voting will be held again like a local election. Although the BBL aims to give them an independent body, they will still abide by national and local laws and is still part of the Philippine government. This is sure to be a very great addition to the Philippines history of resolving disputes in a peaceful manner.

The weapons were turned over to the Philippine government last June 16 during a ceremony with President Benigno ‘NoyNoy’ Aquino, and also as part of the deal of the BBL 145 fighters were also decommissioned after the event. The MILF and many Filipino’s are hopeful that this will finally put a peaceful end to the decade’s long dispute in the Mindanao region. Sadly the passing of the BBL is still uncertain until now but the MILF promised to continue on with the process of decommissioning fighters and turning over whatever weapons that still remain even in the event of the congress failing to pass the BBL.

The process was at a very stable pace until the ‘mamasapano incident’ happened where 44 Philippine National Police (PNP) Special Action Force (SAF) where killed in the midst of a terrorist hunt for one of the FBI’s most wanted. Though their primary mission was accomplished, the casualty was unaccounted for. Now lawmakers and the general population is seeking answers about the involvement of the MILF in the said incident where they even took some of the PNP SAF’s equipment before passing the BBL. Hopefully the truth will be revealed so that peace can now occupy the Mindanao region.
