Sinira ng mga Construction Worker ang isang Pader, Ngunit Hindi nila Inaasahang na Bubungad sakanila ang Bagay na Ito!

Aside from being unwitting witnesses to history, old buildings always have something hidden in their walls. And Selwyn College at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom is no exception when construction workers broke down one of its walls – and uncovered a surprising discovery.

According to the website Dusty Old Thing, a maintenance crew was doing a standard remodeling of the old college’s buildings and cracked open a wall to reveal another small room with dusty antiques.
It was said that they discovered a ‘gyp’, a tiny room used by house servants to prepare tea and toast for the student residents in the morning.

Inside the gyp, somewhat akin to a pantry nowadays, they also found a cooking stove made from iron, harking back from the Victorian era.

Aside from the vintage stove, there was also a treasure trove of other old ephemera – letters, postcards, and cigarette cards. Looks like someone liked to keep a bunch of memorabilia somewhere.

Stamps on the postcards were from the years 1912 to 1916 – making these more than 100 years old!

In the olden days, cigarettes came in packs with colored cards and prints of all sorts, giving today’s generation some snippets of life back then.

Aside from these, an antiquated photograph of Selwyn’s chapel was placed in a fraying paper frame, and it reportedly hasn’t changed that much over the years. The chapel was built in 1895, and there was a mandatory chapel attendance until 1935, according to Wikipedia.

According to the website The Little Things, Selwyn’s archivist is poring over the finds to possibly identify the descendants of those who lived in the old dorm.

The workers decided to put back the wall and seal over the gyp to preserve it longer, or until a better permanent display could be made for the century-old discovery.

Founded in 1882, Selwyn College was founded for young students who couldn’t afford the expensive Oxbridge education back then. Undergraduates only paid for the food, lodgings, along with lectures and tuition.
