Isang Babaeng Seaman, Nabingwit ang Puso ng mga Kalalakihan dahil sa Kanyang Maladiyosang Kagandahan!

In the Philippines, it’s unheard of to have women as part of a ship’s crew. After all, it is common to hear about seamen being away from their families for a long time. The lack of women in sailing could be traced to a long-standing nautical superstition that females are considered bad luck at sea. But this Pinay seafarer just smashed all stereotypes and old beliefs as she became an officer in a cruise liner, after starting at the bottom – below deck, to be exact.

On the Facebook page of Seaman Problems, a post about a ‘seawoman’ turned viral because of the touching story behind her success as well as her beautiful photos. Almost a year after it was posted, her inspiring story racked up 16,000 reactions and has been shared more than 2,000 times. That’s because in a male-dominated industry such as seafaring, this pretty lady is a refreshing sight to sore eyes.

Meet Yvonnie Aliwate, reportedly a 3rd officer for one international cruise liner. According to the Facebook post, she was a deck cadet and is now a chiefmate. However, her seafaring journey is not an easy one, thanks to lack of opportunities because of her gender.

After she finished her studies, Yvonnie already fixed her papers so she could immediately apply as a cadet in ships. However, most companies turned down her application because as she pointed out, “Kadalasan ayaw sa babae.”

Although she understood the maritime companies’ preference for males, Yvonnie decided to try her luck with interisland shipping companies. During her stint with an interisland ship, she was able to learn the ropes. Despite the negative comments, Yvonnie carried on with her career as a seafarer.

With unwavering determination, the former deck cadet slowly climbed the ladder of success. As a chiefmate in an internatioanl cruise ship, the seawoman proved that she’s no hapless mermaid but a force to be reckoned with. She wrote:

“Wag kang umasa sa swerte. Gamitan mo ng umaakitabong gigil ang iyong puso sa pagtupad ng mga pangarap mo.”

There are plenty of fish in the sea, but there can only be one Yvonnie.
